Or 'How we stay green while dealing the the brown stuff'...

Happy New Year to you all!

We hope you have all come out the other side intact no matter your views on the season (Don’t get me started…). Ours was busy but good (thanks for asking ;-D ).

The theme for this year’s blogs we decided to look at all the ways we try to be eco-friendly in our business as well as part of our life-style. We’d really love to hear from you too about what you choose to do to be eco-friendly, as we are always open to new ideas!

Each month we have chosen a topic and then each week we have taken something from that topic to share with you in how we try to be more environmentally friendly. Don’t get me wrong, we aren’t eco-saints! Hannah still drives a diesel van for heaven’s sake, but we are trying (very trying according to some).

We really want to hear from you too about what you choose to do to be eco-friendly, as we are always open to new ideas! Hopefully we will start each blog with the terms which make the topic environmentally friendly!

So without further ado, we start with what many people feel is suitable for the January mood… The Litter Box! ;-D

REUSE | BIODEGRADABLE

Here at Blue Ferret Boarding we use severals types of cages liners and the litters which we use and this week we mention our favourite and most humble liner: The Newspaper. (Cue shiny sparkly lights around the word and a small choir singing a harmonious chord in the background)

Our suppliers range from “Grandad Blue Ferret” dropping in at Hexham to collect a boot-full (thank you Lucinda!!) on his way down from Scotland once a month to see his grandferts; to people who call in to BFB HQ on their way past once a week with their weekly stash.

Newspapers used to come our local corner shop as they just had to remove the date and send it back to get the refund on unsold papers, but now they require the whole newspaper to be returned (booo!!!!). We say this as it might be worth checking your local shop if you want to consider using newspaper!

We love the humble newspaper!

Not only does it tick the REUSE and BIODEGRADABLE boxes, but it’s also free for us and nearly all papers now use vegetable based inks(1) and even recycled paper (2) to produce the newspaper! WIN WIN!

It even means that both we and our kids are up to date with world news, from the Daily Mail to the Telegraph and beyond. Old man Crash Bang always used to request the Financial Times though which we thought was a little pretentious.

Anyhow that’s us. Newspaper all the way – we have boxes and boxes stashed away for those busy seasons, and never say no! We do use other types of litter/liners and we will look at those in the coming weeks of January.

Do any of you use newspaper? What are your sources? We love to hear your thoughts, suggestions and strategies to become more environmentally friendly.

See you next week!
