Savic Crock Bowls: the (plastic!) bowls I’ll happily stand by

Yes, I know – plastic. But hear me out, fuzz-fans. Not all plastics are created equal, and Savic Crock Bowls are the glorious exception that have earned a permanent spot in my ferret toolkit. They’re tough, they last, and they solve problems that flimsy ceramics and feather-light dishes just… don’t.

Why these bowls get my vote

• Built like a tank: The bowl and main holder are seriously sturdy. Mine have survived years of squirmy-worm shenanigans and still look ready for round two.
• Properly secure: They lock onto cage bars, which means fewer dramatic “dinner on the floor” moments and far less ferret-flung kibble art.
• Made in Belgium by Savic from recycled plastic – always a tick for me. (Have a peek at them here: savic.be)
• Easy to clean: Smooth interior, no silly corners; I pop them through a hot wash regularly and they come up a treat.

The tiny weak link (and my easy fix)

The only bit I don’t love is the thin secondary bracket on the holder – it can be the first thing to grumble under strain. My fix is simple and works a charm:

Hannah’s bracket-saving hack

1. Cut a small strip of bicycle inner tube (about finger-width).
2. Wrap it around the cage bar where the bracket grips.
3. Refit the bracket so the rubber sits between plastic and metal.
The rubber gives a little ’bounce’, spreads the pressure and stops stress cracks. Bonus: it helps the bowl stay put when a determined doofus tries a shoulder-barge.

Where they shine (and where they don’t)

Brilliant for:
• Boisterous ferrets who treat light bowls like frisbees.
• Water stations at height (less bedding in the drink).
• Quarantine/boarding set-ups where secure fixings are a must.
• Travel cages – nothing to slide about or tip.

Less ideal for:
• Hardcore plastic chewers (they’re rare, but they exist). If yours think everything is a chew toy, supervise and switch to stoneware and stainless insert if you spot gnaw marks.

Daily care and cleaning
• Daily: tip, rinse, refresh. Give the rim a quick wipe — ferret mouths are… enthusiastic.
• Weekly: hot wash (I do a dishwasher cycle or boiling-water soak), and check the holder for hairline cracks.
• Monthly: loosen and re-seat the bracket so the pressure points aren’t always in the same spot. If you’re using my inner-tube hack, give it a wash too.

End of life (many moons from now)

These things last for ages, but if you do eventually retire one:
• Pop it into hard plastics at your HWRC (Household Waste Recycling Centre).
• Repurpose options: scoop for litter, seed tray for gardening, or a tidy pot for cable ties and zip-ties in your ferret tool box.

“But Hannah… plastic?”

Totally fair question. My take:

• Longevity matters. A single, durable, recycled-plastic bowl you use for years beats a merry-go-round of cheap, brittle ceramics that shatter into a thousand cage-under gremlins.
• Secure mounting matters. Less tipping = less waste, less mess, happier fertles.
• Recycled content and recyclable end-of-life keeps the loop tighter.

If you’re local and want to compare options, I’m still Team Stoneware for floor bowls (think Mason Cash), often with a stainless liner for easy washing. But for on-the-bars, can’t-be-tipped feeding and watering, Savic Crocks are my go-to.
